Cybersecurity Awareness Month Is Right Around the Corner

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Cybersecurity Awareness Month was launched as National Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October 2004 as a joint effort between the National Cyber Security Alliance and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The objective of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month was to raise awareness of the importance of cybersecurity and offer resources to help Americans stay safe online. Now in its 17th year, the month-long program has grown in scope beyond national borders, as cooperating partners around the world join the effort to educate and empower the public to protect their data and privacy online.

October Means Cybersecurity Awareness Month
October means…Halloween, pumpkin carving, and Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

WashU InfoSec is an enthusiastic participant in this now-global event. Throughout the year, we work to ensure the safety of our campus systems and data, and we are proud to be among Cybersecurity Awareness Month Champions recognized by the National Cybersecurity Alliance. During the month of October, we will offer our campus community various events, activities, and resources about how to #BeCyberSmart. Topics on our agenda include:

  1. social engineering campaigns
  2. spotting and reporting phishing attempts
  3. password management
  4. the benefits of multifactor authentication
  5. strategies for protecting private information
  6. the protection and transmission of EPHI

Information security is a shared responsibility, and we rely on your vigilance and cooperation to protect our community from security breaches. We’re in this together. Please join us at our October events and learn more about how to “Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart.”
