It’s the season of medical education – an update from the Office of the Vice Chair of Education!

You have a new Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Medicine; Dr. Abby Spencer can’t wait to get to know you, your programs and your trainees! Look for emails about our upcoming monthly program director/coordinator meetings to share best-practices, problem-solve, share updates, celebrate education, and build community.

Congratulations to all of our WashU med student graduates, with a special celebration for those pursuing internal medicine and even more exciting for those staying within our DOM!

Special congratulations to our DOM residents and fellows who graduate this month!! Wishing them the very best as they move on to jobs, fellowships, further training, and new adventures! We are very excited about all those who will remain within our DOM in new roles!! Welcome home!

Please keep an eye out for the opportunity to apply for the Academy of Educators! Do not miss this incredible opportunity to join a community of educators to expand your network, build your skills, share your expertise, and contribute to educational excellence across Wash U!

Special shout out to the medicine chief residents on their OUTSTANDING grand rounds presentations as well as to all residents, fellows, and their mentors who presented their research recently at the Mentors in Medicine Internal Medicine Symposium held on Wednesday, May 19. Over 30 residents submitted posters with recorded audio presentations and four residents were selected for oral presentations of their projects. Congratulations to Jonah Graves, MD; Tricia Hengehold, MD; Lawrence Liu, MD and Nakul Shah, MD.

The Academy of Educators at Washington University School of Medicine offers participation opportunities for teachers, educators and leaders.

Have an amazing teacher, mentor, or rising educational star you’d like to recognize? Keep an eye out for an email from the Academy of Educators on nominating your colleagues for various education awards!! The rising star award, lifetime achievement, education honor roll and more! Save the date for Academy of Educators Education Day – September 21, 2021.

Trainee mistreatment is sadly on the rise, please don’t miss an opportunity to be kind, teach, share vulnerability, listen carefully, catch a trainee doing something great, share your own mistakes and learning journey, praise publicly, give a “next time try” to someone who asks for feedback, and be the teacher/mentor you always needed!

The new residents and fellows will be here before you know it! Transitions can be bittersweet as we send off our amazing grads and welcome in the next generation.  If you have any words of wisdom or advice for the new trainees, send them to me and we can prepare our own “tips for new docs” document for our new incoming DOM family members.

Take a moment to thank your educational leaders, teachers, directors, administrators, coordinators, and managers today for the amazing job they have done! Be specific!

Have other celebrations, updates, questions or challenges to share or discuss?  Please reach out to Dr. Abby Spencer, MD, MS, FACP, Vice Chair of Education for the DOM at abbys@wustl.edu!
