Anthony Dao, MD named new Director of OUTmed program

Anthony Dao, MD

I am pleased to announce that Anthony Dao, MD has been appointed the new Director of the OUTmed program for the Department of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine.

OUTmed began in 2017 as a forum for LGBTQIA+-identified faculty, trainees, employees and allies. Since its inception, we have successfully increased the visibility of the LGBTQIA+ community at the School of Medicine, created opportunities for mentorship and networking among our LGBTQIA+ community and allies, and provided a forum for discussion of topics pertinent to LGBTQIA+-related healthcare and research.

We thank our founding leader of OUTmed, Dr. Kara Sternhell-Blackwell, for her tireless efforts on behalf of the program. She created the strategic plan, led numerous initiatives and developed programming for OUTmed over the past four years. She is an inspiring leader and we are grateful for her many contributions to this thriving program.

Dr. Dao is an Instructor in Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine. He grew up in Dayton, Ohio and completed his undergraduate and medical school education in the combined BS/MD program at Northeast Ohio Medical University in Akron, Ohio. After completing residency at Washington University/Barnes Jewish Hospital in 2019, he stayed on as faculty in both the Divisions of Hospital Medicine and General Medicine. Dr. Dao is active on committees for the Internal Medicine Residency Program as well as the Committee of Admissions for the School of Medicine. He serves residents in the Primary Care Medicine Clinic and recently was appointed an Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. His interests include transitions of care, medical education, and diversity. In his role as OUTmed Director, Dr. Dao hopes to unite the LGBTQIA+ communities across the Department of Medicine, School of Medicine, Danforth Campus, and BJC to promote visibility, create networking opportunities, foster mentorship, recruit and elevate sexual and gender minority (SGM) faculty, and create a safe space for patients and team members to thrive at Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Dao to the role of the Director of OUTmed,” comments Dominique Cosco, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine and Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. “Dr. Dao is committed to furthering the efforts of OUTmed and developing new initiatives in LGBTQIA+ clinical care, educational curricula, and mentoring for the Department of Medicine faculty, fellows, residents, and staff.”

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Dao on his new position in the Department of Medicine.
