Dr. Vikas Dharnidharka Inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society

Vikas Dharnidharka, MD, MPH, new Alpha Omega Alpha faculty member.

Congratulations to Vikas Dharnidharka, MD, MPH, director of Pediatric Nephrology, Hypertension and Pheresis at Washington University School of Medicine, who was elected as a faculty member to the 2021 Alpha Omega Alpha (AΩA) Honor Medical Society.

AΩA, the only national medical honor society, was organized in 1902 to promote excellence in academic scholarship, honor leadership, and encourage the highest standards of professionalism in the medical field.

Today, there are more than 200,000 members in over 132 chapters in medical schools throughout the United States.  More than 4,000 faculty, residents/fellows, students and alumni are elected each year.

The AΩA elects those who demonstrate through their actions the moto: Be Worthy to Serve the Suffering.  Each school may elect up to 10 faculty, who, based on merit, demonstrate the characteristics of excellence in physicianship in alignment with AΩA’s mission and values.

Dr. Dharnidharka provides highly specialized care to children and young adults with all types of kidney disease, with a specific focus on end-stage renal disease and kidney transplantation.  He has published more than 200 papers and received several research grants.  Dharnidharka is frequently consulted by colleagues throughout the world to advise with difficult complications of solid organ transplantation.

“We did not have AOA chapters in medical school in Bombay in my time, so there was no mechanism for peer-recognition of excellence.  Hence this means a lot to me, to be recognized by my WashU peers!” says Dharnidharka.
