A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the opening of a new dialysis unit at The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis (TRISL), and celebrated the collaborative effort of Washington University Nephrology, TRISL, and Fresenius Kidney Care that made it happen.

TRISL is a 96-bed hospital located in St. Louis’ Central West End that provides comprehensive outpatient and acute inpatient rehabilitation services.  The center, previously offering hemodialysis services only at the bedside, is now home to a dialysis suite containing four dialysis chairs.

“Our WUSM physicians have been rounding at TRISL for a number of years, offering continuity of care for many of our CAKC, FPKC, NCDC patients, as well as inpatients discharging from BJH,” says WashU nephrologist Charbel Khoury, MD, Medical Director of the unit.  “By transitioning from the bedside to a new dedicated space, we can now offer safer and more efficient dialysis treatments for 12 or more patients per day.”

Mark Dwyer, Chief Executive Officer at TRISL, says, “This new dialysis suite will allow us to make inpatient rehabilitation care available at TRISL to even more people.  Everyone deserves a shot at rehabilitation and returning to a rewarding and functional life, and we are proud to expand that access to those who require dialysis.”

“We’d like to thank the TRISL leadership for their steadfastness in getting this project completed,” says Khoury.  “We can now better coordinate the patient’s dialysis schedule with the rehabilitation teams and dialysis nurses, allowing more time for the patient to focus on their physical and occupational therapy.”
