WashU Nephrology faculty members Steven Cheng, MD, and Timothy Yau, MD, were recently honored with Distinguished Service Teaching Awards in recognition of their exemplary service in medical student education.
Towards the end of their first, second, and third years of study, WashU medical school students nominate and vote for faculty and house staff who have had a significant impact on the students’ education. The awards are implemented with support from the Office of Medical Student Education and are co-sponsored by the Dean’s office, the Office of Faculty Affairs, Central Administration and the Executive Committee of the Faculty Council.
Dr. Cheng was honored as Course Director of the Year by the Class of 2023. He also was honored with the Glenn Conroy Module Leader of the Year Award from the Class of 2024. The latter award, established in 2019, is named in honor of former faculty member Glenn Conroy, a well-recognized educator who had previously served as the Course Director for Anatomy & Development in the legacy curriculum.
Dr. Yau was honored as Professor of the Year by the Class of 2023. In addition, he was named Thread Leader of the Year by the Class of 2024. “Thread” is a term used to describe multi-week medical training not covered in specific modules. Dr. Yau’s thread was clinical skills; he was given one half day per week for the entirety of the 16-month Phase 1 curriculum to teach students clinical skills.
