It is our goal to help Department of Medicine faculty members achieve their career goals, including appointments and promotions.

Washington University School of Medicine has a long-standing tradition of excellence in teaching, research and patient care. The school’s future as a premier institution depends on the timely and fair consideration of its faculty with respect to appointments and promotions.

Career planning

The department recognizes four faculty career pathways, each with a set of specific criteria that reflect the needs of each faculty member.

Guidelines and requirements

Department of Medicine faculty are subject to promotion guidelines and requirements both at the department and School of Medicine levels.

Resources

Annual Faculty Evaluation Form

The Department of Medicine has created a new DOM Faculty Evaluation Form (pdf) (password protected) for faculty to use. Learn everything you should know about the new form by viewing the Audio-Recording (mp4) and PowerPoint (ppt) from the virtual session hosted by the Office of Faculty Development and presented by Dr. Hilary Babcock and Dr. Sharon Cresci.

APGAR

One of the most important resources you will use when navigating this process are the Appointments and Promotions Guidelines and Requirements “APGAR”, which apply to all School of Medicine faculty.

revision to the APGAR was approved by the Executive Faculty on January 3, 2024, and ratified by WUSM Faculty on March 4, 2024. The new APGAR will take effect on July 1, 2024. See updated APGAR (PDF) »

Biosketches

Use the Biosketch Template and Biosketch Instructions to create and update your Biosketch. Bernard Becker Medical Library provides sessions and resources on the NIH Biosketch and NCBI SciENcv.

Interfolio

In January 2024, WUSM began using Interfolio, a software system for compiling and storing faculty information. Interfolio’s Faculty Activity Reporting (FAR) module will replace WUPS for generating faculty CVs at WashU. For their annual review, faculty will enter data that will be used to generate a WashU-formatted CV. WUSM Faculty and Administrators can access live recorded training sessions through Information Technology

Letters of Reference and Support

The Office of Faculty Development recently held a workshop on writing letters of reference and support. The workshop provided a general overview followed by a panel discussion of WUSM faculty experts.
